There are several factors that can slow up your refund. They are:
Filing your tax return in the heat of tax season. File it in January, and you can get your refund back in as little as three weeks. File it on April 15 th , and you can wait six to eight weeks.
Electronically filing your return can speed up the process. Conversely, filing it on paper increases the chance of the file getting lost and means that your file has to pass through multiple hands, before it can finally get processed by the computer.
A word of caution: DO NOT USE REFUND ANTICIPATION LOANS to get your refund faster. You will wind up paying an effective interest rate as high as forty percent when annualized. You are better advised to borrow the money off a credit card and then repay the loan when your refund arrives. This is why our firm refuses to offer Refund Anticipation Loans - they are NOT in your best interest.
Double-check the social security numbers for yourself, your spouse and your dependents. The IRS is becoming more and more anal about this issue, and even if they have accepted your return in the past, that is no guarantee that they won't suddenly spot some discrepancy between what's being reported as social security numbers on the return and what is reflected on your social security card. Also, if you've recently married and have changed your last name, but have NOT notified the Social Security Administration, this could also trip up your refund.
Let's suppose that you have already carefully observed all of the above warnings, it's been about two months and there's still no sign of your refund. What now? Grab a copy of your tax return and go the IRS website atwww.irs.gov . You will see a large logo on the IRS homepage entitled "Where's My Refund?" You will be asked to provide the lead social security number and the dollar amount of the refund that you requested on the return. Generally, this will let you know if the IRS has spotted any problems with your refund request, and whether or not they have already mailed it to you or not.
